Welcome to Hangzhou. Today we will connect three things that are easy to discuss separately: water, streets and everyday life. Rather than begin with a long list of rulers, we will follow a practical question: how did people shape this setting, and how did the setting shape their city?
Begin with the lake and the hills. Then add the causeways, islands, buildings and planted spaces that people introduced over time. A cultural landscape includes those relationships, not simply a natural view with monuments beside it. Which feature would you like to understand first? Let us pause and choose one detail together.
The Su Causeway gives us a useful example. Su Shi, a poet and official in the Northern Song period, oversaw work to remove mud from the lake. That mud was used to build a causeway. A material taken from the water became a route across it, connecting practical engineering with the landscape we appreciate.
Water also mattered away from the scenic shore. A city needed reliable ways to bring water into daily use, as well as channels for moving people and goods. Historical descriptions of Lin’an record arrangements that brought lake water towards urban wells. This lets us think about the lake as part of urban services, too.
During the Southern Song period, Hangzhou was known as Lin’an and became the location of the court. The political story matters, but it does not explain the whole city. Officials, traders, craftspeople and households needed different spaces and services. Their activities help us understand what lay beyond the palace and its ceremonies.
The imperial street formed an important axis through that urban world. Along it and the surrounding lanes were places with administrative, commercial, educational and religious functions. Maps and excavated objects help us recover parts of this arrangement. They do not turn every building on today’s street into an original building from the Song period.
Leisure belongs in this picture as well. Tea houses and entertainment areas offered places to meet, watch and spend time, while markets connected people with goods. Imagine following a street through those activities rather than looking only for a palace. Which would you explore first: a market, a workshop or a tea house? Take a moment to decide.
Trade reaches beyond one street. The Grand Canal is a large waterway system built and maintained through successive periods. Carrying grain and other materials was one of its major functions. A boat carrying a necessary supply connects the work of farmers and transport workers with the needs of people living far from the place of production.
Crafts make another connection visible. For silk, mulberry leaves feed silkworms, cocoons provide silk, and prepared threads can be woven into cloth. The finished textile therefore carries a history of materials, tools and learned movements. Looking at its pattern can lead us back to the people and processes that made it possible.
Tea offers a different example. Traditional Longjing making includes skilled work with heat to shape and dry the leaves. The craft links a plant with a finished product, while serving tea creates occasions for people to gather. Those occasions vary; one family’s habits cannot describe everyone who lives in Hangzhou or drinks tea.
Today’s city adds further layers. A familiar street name may survive while buildings, uses and residents change. If you ask for the exact age of a particular structure, I will check its own record rather than borrow the age of the street. Continuity is interesting precisely because it exists alongside changes we can identify.
The Qiantang riverfront broadens the view again. Modern development along the river is another part of Hangzhou, alongside the lake and canal neighbourhoods. Think back to our first question about water and urban life. What difference would you expect between a lakeside path and a riverfront district? We can compare your observations before moving on.
We have followed engineering, water supply, trade, craft and leisure through one city story. The common thread is the relationship between a setting and the people who use and change it. Keep that thread with you at our next stop; a bridge, vessel or textile can become a small doorway into the larger history of Hangzhou.

How did water affect ordinary life, not just famous poets?
Waterways supported movement, trade and daily work. We can connect the canal's transport role with goods, markets and neighbourhood life.
What physical evidence can we observe?
Was today's Hangzhou built all at once in the Southern Song?
No. The city contains many historical layers and modern developments. A Southern Song association does not date every visible building to that period.
How do you identify the layers?
Which part of the city's history can we discuss?
